The Gentrification of Self Help Graphics

Self Help Graphics, a renowed East Los Angeles artist landmark has been sold by the Catholic Archdiocese to a private firm. Hector Becerra covered to story today in the LA Times. The article gives a nice historical line to the origin of Self Help and ends with a rather morose reality regarding Self Help’s inability to maintain its funding. The center has lost thousands of annual dollars and has not paid any rent in years. Known for its infamous Day of the Dead celebrations, it looks like the last days of Self Help are looming. Cheech Marin made a statement saying it was just a building, not the mission of the organization… but yet… I am sadden that the building whose colorful glass walls have for so long been home to many, will now be used for other purposes. Self Help was the meeting place for the South Central Farm Workers, for discussions on Immigration Reform, for youth meeting places and for great times at a local place with local artists and bands.
I for one, don’t agree with how the building was sold. The Archdiose could have made mention of it. For them to sell it under the table without letting anyone know… shady. Of course it brings up ideas as to why things went down the way they did. If we loose Selp Help, what goes next? Self Help now has 6 months left in the building… who knows what the center will do… there will be a press conference at Selp Help on Friday Friday, July 11, 2008 at 10AM.

…wow how can you go without paying rent for THAT long? I wonder why they chose to hand out scholarships instead of.. pay rent.. to remain up and running.

Oh.. And this is Hilarious. Love it. Someone’s got to pay!

Molina said she hoped that the church did not sell the building to help pay for settlements in the priest sex abuse scandal.
