Amigos de Obama have taken the Viva Obama 08 Mariachi song made hugely popular during the primary that exclusively targeted the Texas two-step state, to a whole new genre of music. Calling on the heavily courted Latino swing states of Colorado, Nevada, Florida, Arizona and New Mexico, the new song uses the style of corridos, made popular by bands like Los Tigres del Norte and Los Tucanes de Tijuana to influence Spanish speaking voters. This new norteño version of the song is aimed at targeting Mexican-American voters who favor this style of music and need a little reinforcement/reminder as to how they should vote. Produced by Miguel Orozco for Amigos de Obama, corridos usually tell the story of a struggle, a journey or a hero. In this case, Los Dorados del Norte (The Golden Ones of the North) tell the story of Barack Obama and the reasons why Latinos should vote for him.
Targeted by both camps in the swing states mentioned in the video, Latinos will be the determining factor in obtaining crucial electoral votes. A July survey by the Pew Hispanic Center, determined that Hispanic registered voters support Democrat Barack Obama for president over Republican John McCain by 66% to 23%.
In Denver, Colorado, I asked undecided Mexican American voter Anabel, homeowner, single mother of four who she would be voting for. She said that with the economy being so bad, her company had downsized and she was now struggling to pay the bills, her mortgage and put food on the table. The last thing on her mind was voting for a President. I asked her to take a look at the video. A smile came across her face and she said “ok! I’m voting! They got me!” Then she added, “But now I want to go dancing and I want a cold chela!” Her seven year old son exclaimed, “See mom! I told you should vote for Obama! He’s going to lower your taxes!” As head of household, her vote influences the vote of her two sisters, her brother, her father and the guy she rents the back house too. They will all be carpooling to early vote.
Take that Joe six-pack!
