I’ve been watching Band of Brothers on HBO for the past couple of weeks and have just been completely caught up in the stories of the brave men of Easy Company in WWII. Executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks made the mini series after their work on the mega hit Saving Private Ryan. A few months ago, I had the opportunity to work in collaboration with Annenberg Radio News and Syracuse University on The Veterans Listening Project, in which I produced the interviews of U.S. Army Sergeant and Iraqi war veteran Maria Uribe and U.S. Marines Vietnam Veteran and Silver Star for Gallantry recipient Danny Hernandez, both from East Los Angeles. There is another interview with WWII Veteran Daniel Castro that is pending.
Band of Brothers deals mostly with the paratroopers of Easy Company and I remembered meeting fighter pilot Don Luis de Anda, an Army WWII Veteran in Boyle Heights last year, I looked up the picture on my Flickr account. He had so much pride.
Veterans have a special place in my heart. They give so much to protect our freedoms and our ability to be critical. Despite how we may feel about the current two wars America is involved in, the men and women who serve, deserve our respect.
