Latina Magazine Makes Epic Mistake on 25 Latino Leaders List

Latina Magazine recently published “25 Influential Latinos You’ve Probably Never Heard Of” – and sadly, I have to write a response for one egregious mistake.

In their 25 profiles, one bio stood out as glaringly incorrect. Antonia Hernandez is credited as the current President of MALDEF, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, which protects the civil rights of millions of Latinos in the US. While Ms. Hernandez was in fact the President of MALDEF, is one of our nation’s most brilliant civil rights attorneys, is largely credited for cultivating generations of Latino leaders and quite frankly, changed the world as we know it, she hasn’t been at the organization for about ten years. She is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of the California Community Foundation, one of the largest foundations in the country with over $1 billion in assets.

Whoops! Que vergüenza!

MALDEF is actually run by another brilliant civil rights attorney, Tom Saenz, who is amazing in his own right, but apparently, is one influential Latino that Latina Magazine has never heard of.

Yikes. I mean, I get it, it’s hard to keep track and do a silly thing called research, you have to open a new tab on Google Chrome and type in the organizations name and scroll over to the About section and search and stuff… I mean, UGH. Who has time for that, right?!

Come on Latina  Magazine, I subscribe, I get your magazine, I follow you on Twitter and Facebook. I retweet and repost. You can do better. We deserve better. Antonia Hernandez and Tom Saenz deserve better.

And, can I just say, there is something inherently insulting about the title. It assumes we are ignorant and don’t know who our leaders are. Maybe something like, “25 Leaders You Should Know” would be more appropriate. Enlighten me, don’t insult me.

If you’re reading this and want to give Latina Magazine some, errr, constructive criticism, you can write to them at:
